Lead Interpreting Physician: Mammography (Revised 12-12-19)

The ACR and the FDA require that each mammography facility identify a lead interpreting physician who will be responsible for ensuring that all MQSA-required activities are carried out. The ACR Practice Parameter for the Performance of Screening and Diagnostic Mammography specifies that screening mammography may be performed without a physician in attendance. The Committee on Mammography Accreditation believes that adequate supervision can be maintained at off-site facilities through quarterly professional feedback. The facility should maintain a log of these interactions signed by the radiologist. This review should include all of the following:

• Clinical image quality

• Quality assurance procedures

• QC documentation

• A determination that safe operating procedures are used

In the event that your lead interpreting physician leaves your facility, a new one must be designated, per FDA regulations. A change of lead interpreting physician must be reported to the ACR. Your new lead interpreting physician/supervising radiologist must complete several forms so that we know that he/she is aware of his/her responsibilities. You may update the lead interpreting physician in ACRedit and print the necessary forms from the application.
